“Envysion’s exception reporting allows me to set up alerts for suspicious activity such as a series of small transactions that occur throughout an employee’s shift. We can then go back, pull all of that footage, and see exactly what’s happening with our own eyes.”
El Pollo Loco worked with Envysion to elevate their customer experience; prevent employee theft and fraud; and refine their focus to the most relevant moments of each day. Like most companies, they had a clearly defined formula for success. In this case, it was largely based on a recipe for fire-grilled chicken marinated with herbs, spices, fruit juices and garlic. But what they lacked was a way to effectively monitor and manage in-store restaurant operations, ensuring they were consistently delivering on the El Pollo Loco brand promise—at every location.
They came to Envysion in early 2010 based largely on Envysion’s point of sale (POS) integration, effectively gaining full transparency into every transaction. This visibility helps management ensure that all transactions are legitimate, all cash handling is conducted appropriately, and all of their customers are getting exactly what they paid for. But beyond those expected benefits, management quickly became aware of the additional value Envysion's technology has to offer.
Monika Shah, internal audit analyst and restaurant auditor for El Pollo Loco, said that one of the most surprising and helpful aspects of Envysion is the solution’s ability to refine her focus as a manager. “Envysion’s exception reporting allows me to set up alerts for suspicious activity such as a series of small transactions that occur throughout an employee’s shift. We can then go back, pull all of that footage, and see exactly what’s happening with our own eyes.”
This ability to set exception-related alerts combined with easy access to camera footage—from nearly any location via the cloud-based solution—has resulted in other benefits that directly impact El Pollo Loco’s bottom line. Shaun Jackson, director of risk management at El Pollo Loco, commented, “For area leaders to be able to log on and remotely manage their store from anywhere—even from home—is huge. Not only do they have instant access to stores, but they save the time and expense of having to actually travel to those stores in person. The potential ROI represented by reduced travel alone is huge.”
Extending the Power of Envysion Technology Across the Enterprise
While El Pollo Loco was initially focused on risk management and threat mitigation, they are now beginning to understand the immense potential Envysion offers beyond just restaurant loss prevention. “Different departments have been doing different audits, testing procedures to optimize processes, and using Envysion to measure performance,” said Jackson. “We want to embrace the solution across the whole company—marketing, HR, QA in the kitchen. Our focus is to decrease operational losses and increase profitability, and we see Envysion as a key tool in helping enable us to do that.”
